Your CIBIL score is a three-digit number between 300 and 900 that summarises your credit history. For [home loan](/home-loan)s, most banks want to see 700+, and the best rates go to applicants above 750. If your score is lower, here's a step-by-step plan to fix it.

What CIBIL Score Do You Need for a Home Loan?

CIBIL ScoreLoan Outcome
750 – 900Best rates, high approval probability
700 – 750Approved, but rate may be 0.25–0.50% higher
650 – 700Marginal — selected lenders only, higher rate
Below 650Most banks decline; NBFCs may consider with higher rate
Below 600Very difficult; focus on rebuilding first

What Factors Affect Your CIBIL Score?

CIBIL calculates your score based on 5 factors:

1. Payment history (35%) — The most critical factor. One missed EMI or credit card payment can drop your score by 50–100 points

2. Credit utilisation (30%) — How much of your total credit limit you're using

3. Credit history length (15%) — How long your oldest account has been active

4. Credit mix (10%) — Having both secured (home/car loan) and unsecured (credit card) credit

5. New credit inquiries (10%) — Each time a bank pulls your CIBIL, it leaves a 'hard inquiry' that temporarily reduces your score

7 Proven Ways to Improve Your CIBIL Score

1. Pay every EMI and credit card bill on time — without exception.

Set up auto-debit for all your loan EMIs and credit card minimum due. Payment history is 35% of your score. Even one 30-day delay can cause significant damage that takes months to recover.

2. Bring credit card utilisation below 30%.

If your total credit card limit is ₹2,000,000 and you consistently owe ₹1,60,000 at billing date, your 80% utilisation is hurting your score significantly. Pay down balances or request a limit increase to reduce this ratio.

3. Don't apply for multiple loans simultaneously.

Every time you apply for a loan or credit card, the lender does a 'hard inquiry' on your CIBIL report. Multiple hard inquiries in a short period signal financial stress. Space out applications by at least 3–6 months.

4. Don't close old credit cards.

Your oldest active credit account contributes positively to your 'credit history length'. Closing an old card (even one you don't use) can reduce this length and marginally hurt your score. Keep old accounts open with occasional small purchases.

5. Check your CIBIL report for errors — and dispute them.

Approximately 20–25% of CIBIL reports contain errors — closed accounts showing as open, incorrect payment statuses, or loans you don't recognise. These errors are easy to dispute via CIBIL's online dispute portal and can cause significant score improvement once corrected.

6. Add a secured credit card if you have no credit history.

If you're young with no credit history (score may show as -1 or NH), start with a secured credit card (backed by a fixed deposit). Use it for small purchases and pay the full balance monthly. 12–18 months of this behaviour builds a solid initial score.

7. Ask us about lenders who consider low-CIBIL applicants.

Even if your score is currently 600–650, certain lenders — particularly NBFCs and housing finance companies — assess your overall profile beyond just the score. We work with several such lenders and can evaluate your case confidentially.
